Urban Salon working with Daniel Charny was shortlisted in the RIBA competition to design the Royal College of Art Battersea North site. Urban Salon, which was a finalist in last years Young Architect of the Year Award and Next Generation Award, reached the fourth round of the competition (the second design concept phase of the competition) together with Haworth Tompkins and Fielden Clegg Bradley Architects.
The team, which comprised Urban Salon, structural engineers Momentum, service engineers Faber Maunsell and Curator and Product Designer, Daniel Charny included 4 RCA graduates and 3 RCA tutors.
The competition brief was for a 19 million building containing studio space, retail space, start up atelier units and a lecture theatre that was built over three phases.
The team researched the history and DNA of the existing RCA building in South Kensington and incorporated successful characteristics of the existing site into their proposal in Battersea in order to create an identifiable sibling campus.

Our scheme is a robust space that supports creativity and facilitates change.
The first phase is for the construction of a painting studio for up to 50 students. Our proposal is for a low energy highly flexible studio with a distinct roof that maximizes north-facing natural light.
Phase two, the gallery and fine art studios follow the precedent of the painting school with a distinctive roof and incorporates locally-used Knapped flint (ranging from white to black) cast into concrete panels, echoing the SW7 design principles. Internally, the space is flexible with even light levels all year around in the top lit spaces.
The phase three building has a dramatic corner entrance. Roof level atelier blocks echo the iconic silhouette of the original Darwin block at the Kensington site. A cross campus listings digitial billboard is built into the two main entrances.
All buildings have a high thermal mass and incorporate high level insulation to help moderate interior temperatures and a grey water system.
